The Allure of Diverse Designs: “Too Cute for Boring Jewelry”

Tenelle Bailey has an experienced eye when it comes to choosing jewelry collections that she takes on to represent. It’s important to make room for what the consumer will be attracted to and not just leave it up to your taste. Gemma was excited to collaborate with Tenelle on this project and discover the diverse collections that she has taken under her wing.
Tenelle is always in search of cool and unique jewelry. Therefore, Bailey sources on Instagram a lot for different independent brands, and these particular brands stood out to her. They are all handmade by awesome women from around the world, and each one has a story behind their jewelry design journeys which spoke to her as well.

Tenelle represents eight lines. For this particular feature, Gemma will highlight four. All of the designers offer something different in aesthetic, but all are beautiful and eclectic in their unique way. Aida is a self-taught macramé jewelry designer born and based in Travnik, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. She is inspired by nature in every way and even uses natural thread to make her jewelry. Aida incorporates different aspects of nature into her work. Leaves, flowers, animals, and bugs are widespread in many of her jewelry pieces.

Lia resides and creates in Jaffa, Tel Aviv. She is a mixture of classy, elegant and tomboy with an easygoing, open-minded, creative personality. Her jewelry has a very modern look, which is very contemporary. Lia finds inspiration from musical legends such as Michael Jackson and Madonna and describes her design aesthetic to be a “Digital hipster’s contemporary approach to classy jewelry.”

Kamilah is a Brooklyn, NY native who is obsessed with bright colors and patterns within her style and for her jewelry designs. Her creative inspiration comes to her mostly from being outdoors, as that is often where she will notice certain color combinations or patterns in nature or a piece of architecture, or what someone is wearing.

For a final touch, the exclusive crystal pendant can be disconnected from the bottle and given as a gift to a loved one (to cherish). The chain to which the crystal pendant can be attached can is in the box. This component is perhaps an essential element of the bottle; during the holidays it is all about sharing precious memories with family, friends and loved ones.

One of Bjorn’s latest collections, called ‘Fragile,’ which Gemma covered, inspired the look and design of the bottle. In this collection, the purity and vulnerability of humanity are central and clear crystals play the main role. The ‘Fragile’ collection appeared in several American television shows, including the talk show by “Ellen DeGeneres” and “America’s Got Talent.” Celebrities such as Mel B and Viktoria Modesta have graced the collection. Also, the pendant featured on the bottle comes from the exclusive prêt-a-porter collection of Bjorn, which he launched this fall.

Coinciding with the 10 Year Anniversary of the Legendary Twilight Premieres LOS ANGELES — Chad Hudson Events is coming up on their iconic Ten Year Anniversary of putting on the most exclusive and beautifully designed events for some of the biggest premieres and parties in and out of Hollywood and around the world. Hudson has remained dedicated to his work and he has reason to celebrate! He started his company in 2008, after working in the event department at Warner Brothers. Giving back to the community is also a priority for CHE; which is why Chad started CHE’s favorite WeHo Supperclub dining nights out, where 10% of our patrons’ bill gets earmarked to a deserving Los Angeles based charity. To celebrate this special anniversary, CHE will be hosting their most significant #WeHoSupperClub night ever, at the seven thousand square foot Farmhouse, on Wednesday, November 14. This special event will be benefiting The Trevor Project National Suicide Hotline.

You were an event producer/manager at Warner Bros Pictures. That is a fantastic experience. Did your work there inspire you to create your own Event production Company, especially being able to foresee possible areas where you could change the game a bit?

Yes working at Warner Bros Pictures for seven years with the incredible event team there helped me learn all aspects of producing a successful event both from the client and planning side. My mentor at WB Courtney Saylor taught me a lot about logistics and budgeting, and I did a lot of our event design work in-house at WB and wanted to do more of that.

Did Chad Hudson Events start with smaller and more intimate events? Also, I’m assuming that the goal was to always go to a higher level? It seems like you have created a niche like no other: “An Event Production Company that can handle any talent.” That is quite the accomplishment. Can you please expand?

Yes when I started my company we took on a lot of pro bono charity work, smaller independent film premieres, birthday parties and such. But we then were able to prove ourselves and were awarded larger jobs. Regarding the talent – We have handled talent on many aspects – inviting them to events, managing their guest’s lists on the red carpet, booking travel, star and hand and footprint ceremonies on Hollywood Boulevard, private events at their homes, etc.

Chad Hudson Events has a perfect approach, yet there are so many details involved. You have an incredible team. How do you keep them motivated and what are your expectations from them?

I am very grateful to my amazing team. I’ve been lucky to be surrounded not only by the most talented event team in the business but that we are also friends outside of the office and that makes work fun. As far as expectations go, I trust them to get the job done. I try, and they’re great about running everything by me for feedback, and our relationships work great that way.

Do you thrive off of pressure? Event production (at your level) can be very stressful. What is your perspective on the event production industry? Also, do you consider yourself an “out-of-the-box” thinker? Some of the smartest business people are very adept to finding alternative solutions. 

I thrive off of pressure. I think when we are in one of our super busy stretches or rushing up against a deadline there is an excitement in the air of all that we are accomplishing together. I do consider myself as an out of the box thinker. I like to look a different way to accomplish the same goals for our clients. Some tend to get stuck in a pattern of doing things just because they work, so we try to mix things up a bit, so they don’t get boring.

How do you keep coming up with innovative ideas? I would imagine it takes a solid combination of business and creativity.

Creativity is the key. I like to find inspiration in unique ways. Depending on the event nature, we brainstorm innovative ideas from art, architecture, the event venue, lighting, etc. Sometimes if it’s a film or television premiere, the theme is evident from the synopsis.

You were quoted as saying, “Every step of the CHE experience focuses upon flawless guest list management and personal experience for all filmmakers, talent, executives, and guests.” How do you make this happen?

We have learned from trial and error over the years of how to successfully manage the front of the house and guest list for events. It’s a juggle and depending on the nature of the event frequently takes a lot of my team to get it done. But the bottom line is communication. We have a team who is in constant phone and email contact with the client, guests, filmmakers, execs, talent, etc to make sure they’re taken care of. We then translate that to talent letters with allotments, seating charts, confirmation letters, transportation booking, etc.

What do you do in the small amount of downtime that you have?

I love to travel when I can. That’s my favorite way to escape. Because I’m continually working from wherever I am via phone, it helps to be somewhere without WiFi or cell service haha.

How do you handle your “promotional services” differently than your
“event productions”?
It depends on the promotion type. My first company was Chad Hudson Presents, and I did a lot of promotional events from Halloween, to nightclubs to product promotions, etc. So we have an extensive contact list of different demographics to promote to depending on what the client wants. For our promotions, we usually are working off of more selling tickets or driving guests to a product or service.

How do you manage the logistics of both NYC and LA?

We have our main office in LA and a satellite office in NY. Most of our staff is in LA, but we have a few members of our fantastic team in NY who have been with us since our NY launch seven years ago. We travel back and forth quite a bit. We were there for two significant events last month for over two weeks.

ANY hints for the future of Chad Hudson Events?
We have to keep you guessing about something! 😉

SACHIKA Shuts Down​ LAFW with “Black Sheep” Collection

To-Tam and To-Nya Sachika (twin sisters) (http://sachika.com) and fashion’s Yin and Yang, are a powerful fashion force who are beautiful, powerful, and elegant. Their authentic love for fashion (in both a creative and business manner) shines through in every endeavor that the fashionistas take on. The Sachika sisters started their business in 2009 and are just as inspired today. Through the years, I have covered the Sachika twins for various events, and three characteristics come to mind — passionate about fashion (in all capacities), an incredible work ethic, and their dominant mindset when it comes to achieving their goals. This is a beautiful combination, just like the two of them fusing their unique talents into one original company.

SACHIKA is a contemporary ready-to-wear fashion house established since 2009 by Identical Twin Fashion Designers To-Tam & To-Nya Sachika.  The brand has earned a secure place amongst the stars and influencers as it proudly celebrates and embraces all body types. SACHIKA is known to fabricate beautiful dresses that complement the female body. It has been featured included but not limited in publications such as Italian VOGUE, Forbes, ELLE Magazine, The Fader, Arise Magazine, Teen Vogue, Daily News, NY Times, Businessweek, Fashion Week Daily, and Style.com.

How do To-Tam and To-Nya see the modern woman about fashion?
The Modern Woman is fierce, she’s independent, and she knows what she wants,” says To-Tam. “Designing is like creating the perfect balance between the imaginary mind and the reality of life,” says To-Nya. Their newest collection entitled “BLACK SHEEP” is a collection dedicated specifically to the working woman. She dares to be different and isn’t afraid to go after her dreams. FOR “BLACK SHEEP,” 
they used a combination of different fabrics such as vegan faux fur, satin, polished pontil, ruffled knit and stretched models. The collection as all black, focusing on various textures and silhouettes.

SACHIKA’s staple boutique is located in the trendy Mile-End of Montreal, and their atelier is located in Los Angeles,  where all the designs are created and confectioned. SACHIKA is currently available in Canada, USA & France. Black Sheep is not their first full collection. They have showcased numerous complete collections in the past during NYFW, LAFW as well as MWFW ( Midwest Fashion Week), Toronto Fashion Week, and Viet Fashion Week.

Recently, the Sachika twins debuted the ‘Black Sheep Collection” in Downtown LA at the US Bank Tower, at the Skyscape. It was an exciting show with a meaningful message. The “Black Sheep” collection represents the modern woman who wants to ” Stand Out ” as opposed to blending in within the workplace or when she goes out. The Black Sheep woman doesn’t follow the crowd, she leads the pack and carves her path. The message was important to both To-Tam and To-Nya, as they have carved their own path throughout many years of hard work.

After the show, Gemma Magazine sat down with the Sachika twins to discuss the exciting night and the details that went into it.

How would you describe the “Black Sheep Collection?”

The Black Sheep collection is a staple collection for today’s executive, high-corporate, working woman. We believe every piece in this collection is not only wearable and functional but very much needed for the modern woman who wants to ” Stand Out ” as opposed to blending in within the workplace or when she goes out. The Black Sheep woman doesn’t follow the crowd, she leads the pack, and in this case, she leads with poise, sensitivity, class, and purpose all while wearing outfits that command class and sophistication.

What went into the creative process of casting, designing, and production?
It’s an immense amount of work.

As designers and businesswomen, we always try to work and get inspired by real-life situations. We delved into our past and childhood and remembered how we were still the misfit, the outcast, the rule breaker, the ones who dared to try something different. “The Black Sheep” concept came to us quickly as we realized it was also a path that many successful women had to go through in their journey. For this collection, our focus was a classic, apparel silhouette, important details, and functional and distinguished styles throughout the process. We also believe black is without a doubt, the most worn, as well as the most flattering color for women to wear.

Additionally, We wanted to remove the negative connotation behind the words “black sheep” and instead celebrate every woman’s boldness and uniqueness. Throughout the process of creation and production, we were immersed and inspired by the mission of this collection which was to encourage women to be assertive and to be different.

Is part of your mission/goal to inspire and empower women through fashion?

Thank you, Elisabeth, and absolutely! SACHIKA is so much more than a Designer Label. It is a movement for the Modern Ambitious Woman. At its core, SACHIKA’s real mission is to empower women.

How do you balance it all? Boutique owners, designing, and fashion shows (in addition to traveling a lot to build your brand)?

We are both obsessed with what we do. Seeing women’s faces light up when they wear our clothes because they feel amazing, sexy and powerful, is what truly keeps us going. We love the feeling of being able to put a smile on these women, and we want to continue to do so forever. How do we balance it all with so many things on our plate? By just enjoying the journey every day, always keeping each other in check, properly managing our time and by continually motivating each other.

What do you both do to relax and take a break from the fashion industry?

We both love traveling and discovering new things. Traveling inspires us to create. We also enjoy fitness and singing. You may catch us on stage at some random Karaoke bars in Ktown during the weekend lol. We are also major foodies, and we love to cook. Maybe one day, we will release a cookbook and have our cooking show 🙂

Do you feel you are the perfect combination for forming a business? You are family, as well as having business and creative talents.

We believe two things are essential: 1) having a clear vision of what you want to accomplish 2) having the right team. We are truly blessed to have each other as there is already a strong common ground and an unbreakable level of trust. We feel like God created us and made us identical Twins for this exact purpose. 🙂

What can we expect next from SACHIKA?

We intend on expanding our brand to overseas such as Europe and Asia. We also are working on developing and creating more designs for our men’s line TUXXMAN. You can also expect to see us continue to provide not only excellent designer wear but also a support system for all the modern ambitious women. Thank you for this interview!

Over the Moon for Actress Mouna Traoré

Mouna Traoré is a force — a fantastic actress, who takes her craft seriously and continues to make it fun! Mouna is currently starring on the popular legal drama, In Contempt on BET (www.bet.com) as “rookie” Public Defender Vanessa Hastings. Mouna also made an impact with her portrayal of Dr. Rebecca James on the series Murdoch Mysteries. Traoré is a very talented actress with a beautiful sense of style and a lovely screen presence. Mouna is also a producer and currently has a secret project in the works. She is definitely on the rise, and it was exciting to speak with her about her character roles, her acting ambitions, and her eclectic background.

Mouna Traoré was born and raised in Toronto in a very diverse and multicultural community. Mouna has a big, blended family, with three sisters and one brother, who are all her best friends. “I’m so grateful to be from Toronto because it’s a city that deeply loves and supports the arts.” “I was fortunate enough to be exposed to a lot of art at an early age and given many opportunities to express myself in different mediums,” says Traoré. When she was not filming or traveling, she spoke with Gemma Magazine.

GM: Hi Mouna!! Thank you for joining us. Did you always know that you were interested in the arts and when did you decide to make it a career?

I knew I wanted to be a performer before I even knew what acting was. I must have been 3 or 4! I never also questioned whether or not to make being an actor my career. It was automatic – an inherent knowledge I had early on. I feel like most of the decisions I made as a child, and young adult was with the mindset that it was what I was going to do. I never considered anything else.

GM: You have such a striking presence as well as a beautiful sense of style. Are there specific fashion brands that you adore?

I love the simple elegance of French brands like Iro and Isabel Marant for day to day wear, and I like to mix things up with Japanese designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake. I definitely can’t get enough Pleats Please! I am particularly obsessed with Loewe handbags…

GM: In Murdoch Mysteries, you played Dr. Rebecca James. She’s a great character and develops so well throughout the series into such a rich and multi-dimensional character. How would you describe Rebecca?

Curious, determined, resourceful, and diligent. Rebecca is a humble girl that has an intense thirst for knowledge and genuinely wants to help and support the people around her, especially the constabulary.

GM: I also enjoy your character, Vanessa Hastings, on In Contempt. How has it been working on a legal drama and learning the courtroom jargon?

I think that working on a legal drama is so much fun because the stakes are always so high. Learning the courtroom jargon was a lot to get through, and I found it challenging at times. Playing Rebecca James somewhat prepared me, because medical language from the early 1900’s was also challenging to learn.

GM: Do you feel Vanessa likes her job as a public defender? She is known as “the rookie” and does seem surprised by what her job entails.

Vanessa learns to love her job by the end of the season. Since she starts out as the “rookie,” she learns as she goes along. It’s an entirely new world for her, which is why it seems like she’s a deer in headlights every episode.

GM: I know you travel a lot and are from Canada. However, how do you like LA?

LA is a great city. A little too much driving for me but I feel more and more at ease there. However, I’m very close with my family, and it’s pretty heartbreaking to have so much distance between us.

GM: You are a producer as well. Are you currently working on a project?

I am currently writing a script. It’s too secret (mainly because I’m super sensitive about the whole concept of the project!)

GM: You have been described as having infectious energy on set and so much fun to work with. Is this just a natural part of your personality?

Yeah! I sometimes describe myself as an 8-year-old boy on drugs. I’m a very open, impulsive, energetic person and I’ve been that way my whole life. I’ve calmed down in the past few years, but I’m still a lot for some people to handle.

GM: Can you give us any clues regarding Vanessa in the upcoming season? 

Zero! … I’m still waiting to hear about Season 2 being picked up!

We cannot wait to see what is in store for Mouna Tratoré— Television, and Film!
