In The Spotlight: Creative Entrepreneur Vicky Mara Story

Vicky Mara Story is a fierce force with an excellent affinity for business. Vicky has defined her entrepreneurial skill set as an art and is the ultimate Creative Entrepreneur, within both her family life and business. She excels as a Producer and all facets of overseeing a business. The loveliest part — she’s humble about it. This makes her a “gem” as we say. Gemma Magazine is excited to cover an inspiring woman with both business and creative talents in addition to managing a family,  as we feel the journey of empowered women is to empower others.

How did Vicky Story become a Gemma Magazine aspiration? After speaking with her for ten minutes at a social gathering that Gemma was covering, we knew. Story is soft-spoken, remarkably calm, and has an inner strength. Vicky is a gorgeous woman but more importantly; she’s a beautiful person. She has concrete goals and a creative business sixth sense. The more she talked about her path, (both within business and life), we wanted to know more.

For a bit of backstory, Vicky did not have the most comfortable childhood. Both of her parents immigrated to the states from the Philippines. Their first stop was Ohio but eventually landed in sunny Los Angeles. The Mara family lived on 37th Street (across from USC). Walking to school in South Central L.A. with her siblings consisted of survival, and as a young Filipina girl, she did not always feel safe. However, her home was filled with love, and her father represented strength to her. Both of her parents instilled a strong work ethic within her that Vicky carries with her to this day.

Vicky is also married to acclaimed film Director Tim Story (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1103162/). Vicky and Tim founded The Story Company (http://timstorypictures.com), an entertainment production company, in 1996. They have a wonderful partnership while continually achieving both family and business goals. They also are the parents of three children. Vicky explained how it could be challenging working together at times, yet, it’s also a beautiful collaboration. While Tim is immensely busy directing, Vicky handles all business affairs and logistics for The Story Company.

When she had a moment, she sat down with us to chat. We must note, there could not be a more appropriate last name for the Story family. The entire family is lovely and Vicky has set the tone for the family environment. Tim Story is very supportive of Vicky’s projects and they both are advocates for education.

The Story Family

After hearing your story (Both ups and downs), it’s apparent that you have so much love and respect for both your parents. How did they inspire you?

My dad and mom had an incredible work ethic. My dad was a real businessman — he ran rental properties, owned a market in South Central L.A. and managed a nursery. He was terrific under pressure and never cracked. My dad was a self-made entrepreneurial businessman. My mom worked for LAUSD for thirty years, and her consistency was such an influence. They sacrificed so much for their children, and it made an enormous impact. My interest in a business career is most likely from the importance of having a strong role model as a father and watching him succeed through good and hard times.

Why were you drawn to production?

For me, production is inspiring. I naturally am attracted to business — numbers, organization, logistics, budgeting, and scheduling. I probably got it from my dad. I received my degree in Operations Management from Cal. State L.A. Many of the characteristics of Operational Management consist of the production process. I eventually started producing music videos. I worked my way up from PA to Production Manager to Producer. The hours were long (first to arrive and last to leave), but I loved it!

unnamed

Did you and Tim meet through work?

No, we were friends for two years before working on ‘The Firing Squad,’ the first independent movie we made together. After ‘The Firing Squad,’ we moved on to music videos. Tim directed music videos before getting into the film industry. However, I never produced for him, only for other directors, but would oversee all his business affairs at The Story Company. He’s a true creative storyteller and is in his element when directing a film. We are both very supportive of each other’s career achievements, and it’s a great balance.

As Executive Producer of The Story Company, what type of productions would you like to bring to fruition and what are you currently producing?

We want to broaden the scope a bit and start branching out more into the television sector as well as producing more as a company, whether it’s an episodic, cable, network or other streaming platforms. Currently, ‘Prince of Peoria’ (https://www.netflix.com/Title/80223556) has been the most recent production airing on Netflix. It centers around a prankster prince who wants to experience life as an ordinary teen leaves his kingdom to live incognito with a single mom and her studious son. We are excited about The Story Company’s upcoming film project. Tim will team up with Eddie Murphy for New Line Comedy Inspired by the hit Walter Matthau-Jack Lemmon comedy ‘Grumpy Old Men.’ Tim will direct and produce the comedy through the Story Company banner, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett is also producing.

What do you like about production?

unnamed-3

I love the energy of production. As soon as you walk on set, there is this fantastic setting for all creatives from all departments to thrive. It allows me to be in my own world and be an entrepreneur. The beginning is always exciting because the project gives you a clean slate, and you get to build in every department. I love dealing with budgets, negotiating, and money. I’m a businesswoman at heart and production allows me to do that on a per project basis since there is a beginning, a middle, and an end. Therefore, I get to treat every production like it’s a new business venture.

You are also a devoted wife and mom. Do you find the balance difficult?

Well, the kids are a bit older now, so it’s not as physically taxing.  I’m very good at time management and setting my priorities for each day (both family and business). Of course, as a mom, there are so many sacrifices we make. I have recently had a renewed sense of wanting to take The Story Company in different directions as well as take on other business opportunities I’m developing. With three children, there are always activities, homework, and sports.  We are big on family life, and it’s our priority.

“Mindfulness represents unconditional love towards the self (without judgment, resentment, or past mistakes), that will transcend and produce a beautiful sense of peace. Ultimately, it is about understanding your true core and letting go of others opinions. My path is in front of me and I take one step at a time.” (Vicky Mara Story)

You are so calm and centered. Do you meditate or practice mindfulness?

I do, but it’s a process. With meditation, it took a while for me because I had to learn that there is more than one way to do it and the most important way is what works for you. In my personal experience, meditation and mindfulness go together. If we are truly able to clear our heads of all the clutter and distracting thoughts, we can have an authentic presence with just “being.” Then, we are completely living in the present moment. I had to get “out of the box” of what it’s all supposed to look like and tap into me. For me, it was honoring myself, accepting myself, being mindful of my time, and understanding what I can give back to others and family. As women, we have a lot of responsibility placed on us as wives, mothers, and work. Mindfulness represents unconditional love towards the self (without judgment, resentment, or past mistakes), that will transcend and produce a beautiful sense of peace. Ultimately, it is about understanding your true core and letting go of others opinions. My path is in front of me and I take one step at a time.

What does self-empowerment mean to you?

For me, Self-empowerment is to stand in your truth authentically and being confident in who you are. It means sharing with people you trust through selfless conversations and giving them insight, empowering them, and having an impact on others. Personally, being authentic with yourself and others is the ultimate empowerment. It has represented understanding my power and accepting it. It has also consisted of standing tall and moving forward without reservation and affecting others who we love.

Vicky Story is such an inspiration as a woman, entrepreneur, and someone who gives back to the community. On behalf of Gemma, I would like to thank her for her time and thoughtfulness for such an insightful interview.

Staying True to his Craft: Actor Spencer Trinwith Talks Upcoming Projects and “Wonder Woman 2”

The decision to pursue acting is always a brave one. Of course, many artists feel it is their life passion and must fulfill their dream. The fact is the industry consists of handling rejection, competition, and hard moments. However, certain artists learn to lean into the struggle (setbacks and all), and channel that energy to become even more passionate and determined. Sometimes, there is even an art to learning how to adapt. Such is the case with talented actor Spencer Trinwith, who always knew from an early age that he wanted to be an actor. Spencer is within his authentic element when working on a film set. He’s on the rise and applies a smart and insightful approach to his craft. Spencer has also experienced an enormous health challenge but tapped into other forms of creativity to stay focused. Trinwith knew acting was his life purpose and that would not change. “There is something so special about how collaborative acting is — all of these different parts moving in unison and working toward a similar goal. Not to mention, it’s darn fun,” said Trinwith.

IMG_2044

Trinwith explained his desire to act as a career became very clear in High School. He expanded by emphasizing that he was not into academics. Spencer wanted to focus on the arts. He attended the University of North Carolina for the Arts and lived in DC for a while. He comes from actor parents and due to his innate interest in the arts combined with the family exposure to creative endeavors inspired his ambition even more. He was even named after Spencer Tracy. Trinwith has quite an impressive resume. He has appeared on television in “Law & Order: SUV” alongside special guest star, Sharon Stone as well as the television show “VEEP” with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Hugh Laurie. Spencer’s professional theater credits are extensive. He played Norm in “Suicide, Incorporated” in Washington, DC to stellar reviews. He also starred in an adaptation of the Stanley Tucci film “Blind Date” titled “The Personals,” for the stage.

After a health setback at the age of 21 that left him viewing life from a different perspective, his mindset had to shift to keep him healthy and focused on healing as well as still inspired to accomplish his future goals. Spencer has made a full recovery and even worked on five films this past summer. He’s excited about his short film (about to hit the film festival circuit), Saved by Grace, which required intensive physical stuntwork. Spencer happily took on the challenge. He is also starring in Wonder Woman 2 1984, which is “set for July 5th, 2020 Warner Brothers worldwide release. His story is inspiring, and when he had a moment, the thoughtful and passionate actor took the time to speak with us.

Tell me a bit about your childhood. Your parents are involved in the acting world, correct? It’s always great to have that support.

It is wonderful! I get to have a scene study partner pretty much on call 24/7 between the two of them! I grew up in the Bay Area and Washinton, DC. My parents have always been incredibly supportive of me pursuing this career.

You recently went through a challenging time with degenerative disc disease. How did you stay so strong mentally? Did you feel there was a time that you might not be able to act again?

Music. Most of the time playing guitar would be too difficult for me. But I got into producing on my computer. I would spend hours while on bed rest. Sometimes days. I would compose music — everything: hip-hop beats, electronic, rock, metal, soundtrack, EVERYTHING. I have a gigantic catalog of music from my time before my surgery. I’m very proud that despite everything, I was still able to find a way to be creative. I never stopped creating!

You have had the opportunity to work on many film sets over the past summer. What was the film shoots like for Saved by Grace and Really Love?

IMG_0863

Saved by Grace was particularly exciting for me because I got to perform all of my stunts. From hand to hand combat, to falling out of trees. They had me doing just about everything, and I welcomed it! Mud and everything! I had a blast working on Really Love. My scene with Kofi Siriboe and Yootha Wong-Lou-Sing was virtually all improvised. It was such a fun give-and-take!

Regarding your acting process, you had mentioned that you try to approach from a simplistic approach versus “doing too much.” Can you elaborate?

Yes, the age-old actor dilemma of: “What do I do with my hands right now?” We can easily fall into the trap of feeling like “we are not doing enough” and because of that: we can run the risk overcompensating. Trying to push for a result. For me, I try to keep it to a few steps — Know what your character wants, commit to your character’s circumstances, listen to your acting partner, respond to your acting partner and your hands will follow after.

spencer outsideAlso, you are always challenging yourself to step outside your comfort zone with your roles. Is this your nature concerning risk-taking with specific roles?

I feel it’s a bit of a mutual attraction! I enjoy working on roles that are a far departure from myself, or extreme circumstances. To let my imagination run wild with the thought of “What If?” It’s certainly a rush and a difficult task. But I love it.

What does acting bring to you personally as well as your life?

I cannot live without it. There is something so special about how collaborative acting is — all of these different parts moving in unison and working toward a similar goal. Not to mention, it’s darn fun. When I was on bedrest, it was very isolating. Yet I did have a deep, burning desire for acting and knew that is where I belonged.

After living in DC, which is a gorgeous city, what do you think of L.A. now that you are after living and auditioning here?

DC And LA couldn’t be any more different! Both have a lot to offer. I will say though, the first time I ever flew into Los Angeles, (considering I have no family here or relation to this city), as soon as my plane touched down at LAX, I had this overwhelming sense of belonging. I knew this was going to be my home and when you are in a new home its best to create a network of friends and associations that make you honestly feel “at home.”

You have been working so much. Did you take a Thanksgiving break?

I did not spend Thanksgiving with my parents this year. I volunteered with “family” at Project Angel Food in Los Angeles, bright and early at 6 am on this holiday, prepping meals in their kitchen for those in need. It’s a fantastic charity in Los Angeles County which provides free meals for men and women too sick to shop and cook for themselves, and it’s been doing this for almost 30 years.

Everyone is super excited about WW2 1984! Can you please expand upon your character a bit?

Due to NDA (non-disclosure agreement), I can’t speak about my character or the film. However, I’m so excited for its release as I’ve been a lifelong fan of DC comics and characters!

Gemma Magazine would like to thank Spencer Trinwith for joining us. We can’t wait to see all of his upcoming projects. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to do a followup. For now, Spencer is happily traveling due to nonstop work and living out of a suitcase. He would not have it any other way.

Breaking Dawn – part 2

After speaking with him, it’s very inspiring to see the time and commitment he has put into building his company. The pressure can be high-level, but also something Chad seems to thrive on. When Chad had a quick moment to stop, he took the time to speak with us.

20150709A_0342A-X2

ComicCon 2015

You were an event producer/manager at Warner Bros Pictures. That is a fantastic experience. Did your work there inspire you to create your own Event production Company, especially being able to foresee possible areas where you could change the game a bit?

Yes working at Warner Bros Pictures for seven years with the incredible event team there helped me learn all aspects of producing a successful event both from the client and planning side. My mentor at WB Courtney Saylor taught me a lot about logistics and budgeting, and I did a lot of our event design work in-house at WB and wanted to do more of that.

Did Chad Hudson Events start with smaller and more intimate events? Also, I’m assuming that the goal was to always go to a higher level? It seems like you have created a niche like no other: “An Event Production Company that can handle any talent.” That is quite the accomplishment. Can you please expand?

Yes when I started my company we took on a lot of pro bono charity work, smaller independent film premieres, birthday parties and such. But we then were able to prove ourselves and were awarded larger jobs. Regarding the talent – We have handled talent on many aspects – inviting them to events, managing their guest’s lists on the red carpet, booking travel, star and hand and footprint ceremonies on Hollywood Boulevard, private events at their homes, etc.

Chad Hudson Events has a perfect approach, yet there are so many details involved. You have an incredible team. How do you keep them motivated and what are your expectations from them?

I am very grateful to my amazing team. I’ve been lucky to be surrounded not only by the most talented event team in the business but that we are also friends outside of the office and that makes work fun. As far as expectations go, I trust them to get the job done. I try, and they’re great about running everything by me for feedback, and our relationships work great that way.

Do you thrive off of pressure? Event production (at your level) can be very stressful. What is your perspective on the event production industry? Also, do you consider yourself an “out-of-the-box” thinker? Some of the smartest business people are very adept to finding alternative solutions.

I thrive off of pressure. I think when we are in one of our super busy stretches or rushing up against a deadline there is an excitement in the air of all that we are accomplishing together. I do consider myself as an out of the box thinker. I like to look a different way to accomplish the same goals for our clients. Some tend to get stuck in a pattern of doing things just because they work, so we try to mix things up a bit, so they don’t get boring.

How do you keep coming up with innovative ideas? I would imagine it takes a solid combination of business and creativity.

Creativity is the key. I like to find inspiration in unique ways. Depending on the event nature, we brainstorm innovative ideas from art, architecture, the event venue, lighting, etc. Sometimes if it’s a film or television premiere, the theme is evident from the synopsis.

You were quoted as saying, “Every step of the CHE experience focuses upon flawless guest list management and personal experience for all filmmakers, talent, executives, and guests.” How do you make this happen?

We have learned from trial and error over the years of how to successfully manage the front of the house and guest list for events. It’s a juggle and depending on the nature of the event frequently takes a lot of my team to get it done. But the bottom line is communication. We have a team who is in constant phone and email contact with the client, guests, filmmakers, execs, talent, etc to make sure they’re taken care of. We then translate that to talent letters with allotments, seating charts, confirmation letters, transportation booking, etc.

2-3

Breaking Dawn – part 2

What do you do in the small amount of downtime that you have?

I love to travel when I can. That’s my favorite way to escape. Because I’m continually working from wherever I am via phone, it helps to be somewhere without WiFi or cell service haha.

How do you handle your “promotional services” differently than your
“event productions”?
It depends on the promotion type. My first company was Chad Hudson Presents, and I did a lot of promotional events from Halloween, to nightclubs to product promotions, etc. So we have an extensive contact list of different demographics to promote to depending on what the client wants. For our promotions, we usually are working off of more selling tickets or driving guests to a product or service.

Stoli's Most Original Bartender Competition

How do you manage the logistics of both NYC and LA?

We have our main office in LA and a satellite office in NY. Most of our staff is in LA, but we have a few members of our fantastic team in NY who have been with us since our NY launch seven years ago. We travel back and forth quite a bit. We were there for two significant events last month for over two weeks.

ANY hints for the future of Chad Hudson Events?
We have to keep you guessing about something! 😉

SACHIKA Shuts Down LAFW with “Black Sheep” Collection

To-Tam and To-Nya Sachika (twin sisters) (http://sachika.com) and fashion’s Yin and Yang, are a powerful fashion force who are beautiful, powerful, and elegant. Their authentic love for fashion (in both a creative and business manner) shines through in every endeavor that the fashionistas take on. The Sachika sisters started their business in 2009 and are just as inspired today. Through the years, I have covered the Sachika twins for various events, and three characteristics come to mind — passionate about fashion (in all capacities), an incredible work ethic, and their dominant mindset when it comes to achieving their goals. This is a beautiful combination, just like the two of them fusing their unique talents into one original company.

SACHIKA is a contemporary ready-to-wear fashion house established since 2009 by Identical Twin Fashion Designers To-Tam & To-Nya Sachika.  The brand has earned a secure place amongst the stars and influencers as it proudly celebrates and embraces all body types. SACHIKA is known to fabricate beautiful dresses that complement the female body. It has been featured included but not limited in publications such as Italian VOGUE, Forbes, ELLE Magazine, The Fader, Arise Magazine, Teen Vogue, Daily News, NY Times, Businessweek, Fashion Week Daily, and Style.com.

Sachika's Black Sheep Fasshion Show

How do To-Tam and To-Nya see the modern woman about fashion?
The Modern Woman is fierce, she’s independent, and she knows what she wants,” says To-Tam. “Designing is like creating the perfect balance between the imaginary mind and the reality of life,” says To-Nya. Their newest collection entitled “BLACK SHEEP” is a collection dedicated specifically to the working woman. She dares to be different and isn’t afraid to go after her dreams. FOR “BLACK SHEEP,”
they used a combination of different fabrics such as vegan faux fur, satin, polished pontil, ruffled knit and stretched models. The collection as all black, focusing on various textures and silhouettes.

SACHIKA’s staple boutique is located in the trendy Mile-End of Montreal, and their atelier is located in Los Angeles,  where all the designs are created and confectioned. SACHIKA is currently available in Canada, USA & France. Black Sheep is not their first full collection. They have showcased numerous complete collections in the past during NYFW, LAFW as well as MWFW ( Midwest Fashion Week), Toronto Fashion Week, and Viet Fashion Week.

Recently, the Sachika twins debuted the ‘Black Sheep Collection” in Downtown LA at the US Bank Tower, at the Skyscape. It was an exciting show with a meaningful message. The “Black Sheep” collection represents the modern woman who wants to ” Stand Out ” as opposed to blending in within the workplace or when she goes out. The Black Sheep woman doesn’t follow the crowd, she leads the pack and carves her path. The message was important to both To-Tam and To-Nya, as they have carved their own path throughout many years of hard work.

After the show, Gemma Magazine sat down with the Sachika twins to discuss the exciting night and the details that went into it.

How would you describe the “Black Sheep Collection?”

The Black Sheep collection is a staple collection for today’s executive, high-corporate, working woman. We believe every piece in this collection is not only wearable and functional but very much needed for the modern woman who wants to ” Stand Out ” as opposed to blending in within the workplace or when she goes out. The Black Sheep woman doesn’t follow the crowd, she leads the pack, and in this case, she leads with poise, sensitivity, class, and purpose all while wearing outfits that command class and sophistication.

1-5

What went into the creative process of casting, designing, and production?
It’s an immense amount of work.

As designers and businesswomen, we always try to work and get inspired by real-life situations. We delved into our past and childhood and remembered how we were still the misfit, the outcast, the rule breaker, the ones who dared to try something different. “The Black Sheep” concept came to us quickly as we realized it was also a path that many successful women had to go through in their journey. For this collection, our focus was a classic, apparel silhouette, important details, and functional and distinguished styles throughout the process. We also believe black is without a doubt, the most worn, as well as the most flattering color for women to wear.

Additionally, We wanted to remove the negative connotation behind the words “black sheep” and instead celebrate every woman’s boldness and uniqueness. Throughout the process of creation and production, we were immersed and inspired by the mission of this collection which was to encourage women to be assertive and to be different.

A quote to Love:

“The Modern Woman is fierce, she’s independent, and she knows what she wants.” says To-Tam. “Designing is like creating the perfect balance between the imaginary mind and the reality of life,” says To-Nya.

1-4

Is part of your mission/goal to inspire and empower women through fashion?

Thank you, Elisabeth, and absolutely! SACHIKA is so much more than a Designer Label. It is a movement for the Modern Ambitious Woman. At its core, SACHIKA’s real mission is to empower women.

How do you balance it all? Boutique owners, designing, and fashion shows (in addition to traveling a lot to build your brand)?

We are both obsessed with what we do. Seeing women’s faces light up when they wear our clothes because they feel amazing, sexy and powerful, is what truly keeps us going. We love the feeling of being able to put a smile on these women, and we want to continue to do so forever. How do we balance it all with so many things on our plate? By just enjoying the journey every day, always keeping each other in check, properly managing our time and by continually motivating each other.

1-3

What do you both do to relax and take a break from the fashion industry?

We both love traveling and discovering new things. Traveling inspires us to create. We also enjoy fitness and singing. You may catch us on stage at some random Karaoke bars in Ktown during the weekend lol. We are also major foodies, and we love to cook. Maybe one day, we will release a cookbook and have our cooking show 🙂

Do you feel you are the perfect combination for forming a business? You are family, as well as having business and creative talents.

We believe two things are essential: 1) having a clear vision of what you want to accomplish 2) having the right team. We are truly blessed to have each other as there is already a strong common ground and an unbreakable level of trust. We feel like God created us and made us identical Twins for this exact purpose. 🙂

What can we expect next from SACHIKA?

We intend on expanding our brand to overseas such as Europe and Asia. We also are working on developing and creating more designs for our men’s line TUXXMAN. You can also expect to see us continue to provide not only excellent designer wear but also a support system for all the modern ambitious women. Thank you for this interview!

Ten minutes into my interview with Jezlan Moyet, it’s clear that she is genuinely the charismatic and gorgeous entertainment personality you see every morning on “Good Morning LaLa Land” (goodmorninglalaland.com) from Focus TV (focustvnetwork.com), which is America’s first LIVE Streaming Daily Lifestyle Talk Show (M-F 9 am PST). Jezlan is passionate and driven about her career (she is also the Managing Editor of FOCUS Magazine and hosts various red carpet award shows), works extremely hard, has an astute talent for listening, and most important; holds her Michigan roots close to her heart. She values her Midwest upbringing but always felt there was more regarding fulfilling her purpose within her career and life. After graduating with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. Moyet made a move to LA to authentically fulfill her dreams. As Moyet said herself, “LA has been good to me.”

NYFW19

On camera and the red carpet, Jezlan doesn’t miss a beat and makes it look seamless. Jezlan was also very candid about the immense workload her schedule calls for, but she seems to thrive upon it as well. She is fun to watch, and you can catch her every morning on “Good Morning LaLa Land” along with her talented co-hosts Dr. Erin (Doctor of Divinity) and lovely life coach Rob Mack. Topics range from female empowerment, fashion, food, health, spirituality and much more. The show currently airs on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. We loved that she admitted to having “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out), and when Moyet had a moment to stop, we met at Alfred Coffee in West Hollywood for lattes to discuss her projects and nonstop life that has become second nature to her.

NYFW9Did you always know your career path? If yes, did it make it easier?

Yes, I did! I’ve known since I was seven or eight years old. My best friend and I always wanted to play “talk show.” We borrowed a video camera and took turns playing host and interviewee. I was also into fashion and knew that I wanted to model. I had a clear vision of what I liked and wanted to do at a very early age. I do feel blessed to have known, but the dedication and discipline it takes in my business did not necessarily make “knowing early on” easier.

What was it growing up in the Midwest?

Growing up in the Midwest taught me to be genuine and a hard worker. These two values were instilled in me from a young age. The way that I grew up, nothing was ever handed to you. It’s a great lesson. My mom is the most determined person that I know. She’s a fantastic role model and very strong-willed, and I’m grateful to have that trait.

After getting your degree in Broadcast Journalism, how did you transition into the modeling industry, which is a fantastic opportunity but not always easy? Can you please expand?

Well, (not to sound cliche), but a designer in France discovered me. I was ready then. However, I had made a deal with my mom to finish my education first and did just that while working on the side. When I graduated, I packed up my car and headed out to LA and got two agents. With modeling, I worked hard, and it taught me great life lessons. I traveled all over the world and met fantastic people. I remained focused. It was the first time I had to think like a businesswoman and begin building my brand as well as create firm boundaries.

NYFW14

Did you feel acting might be the next step?

That’s an interesting question because I received many offers. However, all too similar: “pretty girl in the background.” I do continue to model but also knew I had more to offer so transitioning myself to an entertainment personality felt natural (especially with my background in Broadcast Journalism). I can most definitely say that I love what I do and am in my element.

What was it like entering red carpet territory? I’m always amazed by how much information the hosts are prepared for.

I love being on the red carpet! Fashion, entertainment, actors. I was very nervous at first and had to work up to a confidence level. However, I knew this was my purpose. The preparation is intense, but I have excellent memorization skills, which is vital to what I do. I also learned that if you don’t know everything, it’s ok. Most importantly, I’ve realized that trusting yourself is vital. Then you become a vehicle or vessel for that personal trust and can focus upon the work.

How was the transition to “Good Morning LaLa Land”?

The transition was very natural, and I’m in my element, for sure. Again we stream live daily (M-F). The preparation can be daunting at times. My day starts at 5 am and it’s nonstop. I go to work daily with two fantastic co-hosts — Dr. Erin, who has infinite wisdom and Rob Mack, life coach extraordinaire. I feel fortunate. It did take a while to get the vibe down, but it has been such a positive experience. We have great guests and you learn from every show.

Do (or did) you ever struggle with following an “atypical” path? I ask this because I can relate.

A typical path was never for me, ever. I knew that from the beginning. Sometimes it can be challenging, but I have a solid and supportive community of people within LA who believe in me. We all need our community or tribe of people, friends, and family (even if they are not family members) who support your dreams and you as a person. Furthermore, yes, my industry is competitive. However, I’m fulfilling my purpose and I’ll take and everything that comes with it than choosing a safer route.

I know you and your co-hosts talk about mindfulness and spirituality a bit on “Good Morning LaLa Land.” What does spirituality mean to you?

I grew up Catholic and Christian. I do have a strong sense of faith that shaped my present-day spiritual beliefs. Even if I do not always practice my beliefs through organized religion, I do feel there is a higher truth and being out there. I’m pretty much in a gray space on this subject and happen to love the many shades of gray. It gives you room to question.

On a lighter note, you admitted to having a bad case of ‘FOMO.’ Tell us more.

I do have a serious case of Fear of Missing Out! I have it bad:). I want to say yes to everything. I’m inspired by the energy of other creative individuals and love learning about people. It’s simply part of my DNA. I’m passionate about building my brand as well as connecting with people on a greater level. This is essential in today’s work culture — even if you are creative minded.

“I think of myself and my brand as a business. I’m invested in building a quality tribe so we can rise together and support one another and that’s the strength of my business — just being a connector of people.” (Jezlan Moyet)

You have an incredibly busy schedule. How critical is self-care to you?

I highly value self-care. Even with my schedule, it’s so important to stop, turn off the phone, and download. I probably should do it more and encourage all women to do it. I am learning to meditate, and the rejuvenation process is so essential. I need to be my best self so that I can be present for what I do.

NYFW27

You always look lovely in clothes and have great style. What are some of the Fashion brands that you love?

Thank you! I do adore fashion. Firstly, I love supporting the local community and the female community in creating my personal, signature style. I’m a big fan of designer Rochelle Goodrick (rochellegoodrick.com). She’s from New Zeland but now lives in LA. When I wore her clothes, it was the first time that I felt empowered by what I’m wearing. I wore many of her pieces to NYFW as they capture form and the feminine body. I go through so many wardrobe changes within a day and try to be as fashion conscious as possible. I also recently collaborated with the company Kollectin (www.kollectin.com), a social application where contemporary designers can continue to thrive and be discovered, with the support of personal influence. They are a great company and readers can download the app and use the invite code: Jezlan.  She happened to be wearing a Kollectin ring during the interview which was stunning.

Blake Borders~Teen Actor Taking Risks and on the Rise

Blake Borders (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm8767522/?ref_=nv_sr_1) is only sixteen and is fiercely following his passion. Blake has numerous acting credits to his name and has no plans on slowing down. He has starred in various shorts and has an upcoming feature film coming out. Blake is not your typical teen, but he’s doing what he’s passionate about — acting. Blake Borders has fully committed himself to his craft and is making his mark. Talented, warm, and smart, he has a clear vision and works passionately to fulfill his dream. Blake is based in Clovis, Ca but makes the commute to Los Angeles for auditions, premieres, and scene study intensives. He has an extremely healthy perspective on the industry and is authentic in his desire to act.

He is currently signed with LA Management (with Addison Witt as his Manager) and recently signed with Alicia Beekman as his Agent with Commercial Talent Agency. An integral aspect of Blake’s success has been the immense support from both of his parents.  Again, he’s only sixteen (and already passed the CHSPE Exam and his Driver’s test). After communicating with his mom, Heather Borders, it’s very inspiring to see her support. Recently Gemma Magazine had the fantastic opportunity to interview Blake, meet his family, and get to know him while he was in L.A. for an acting workshop.

IMG_5824

It’s so lovely to meet you finally! Thanks for joining. What sparked your interest in acting?
Thank you so much for having me. I have always known since a young age that I wanted to perform. I would make movies with my sister and the neighborhood kids. I starred in a 4th-grade play and felt comfortable on stage. I ended up loving theatre program and my Elementary school productions. My passion grew from there. I decided to take it further. There was a local agency up north that led to some great connections and that eventually resulted in me signing with LA Management, (under the guidance of Talent Manager Addison Witt). It helped tremendously with castings, workshops, and support. I’m genuinely grateful for Addison Witt’s support. He’s made the entire process so much easier.

What was it like going from the theater to real-life auditions?
Auditioning, at first, made me incredibly nervous and I had to work through it. For a while, it was very challenging. However, I knew how much I enjoyed acting. Now, I’ve been performing consistently for over 2 1/2 years and auditioning feels natural.

How does acting make you feel (as Blake Borders)?
Acting makes me feel great. I’m in my element, and I find it joyful. I get to step outside of myself. It’s so much fun to see the final product after putting in so much work. With dramatic pieces, in particular, even more so. You get to connect with people in a way that would not usually do so in a regular job or profession. I also find joy in seeing the reaction on people’s faces after a film screening to see how it affects them. It’s always nice when the work you have been a part of touches other

The Fringe of Existence is upcoming, which is a very dramatic piece. How did the shoot go? Also, can you please expand on the director, Felipe Cisneros.

IMG_5821

The Fringe of Existence

The Fringe of Existence was a fantastic experience. I play Harrison and the entire cast is great.  Jackie Dallas also stars in it. It’s very dramatic. It’s currently going through the film festival process. Yes, Felipe Cisneros directed the film, who had such a strong vision from the beginning and that helped the film launch. He’s wonderful at communicating what he wants to the cast. That made it so much easier. Felipe also won best directing and writing for the film.

Farewell Cherry Summit is another great short film you starred in. Currently, it is on Youtube. We enjoyed your character Ben as well as the chemistry between you and Emmy (played by Bree Leon).

That was also a great project. Again, I play a shy kid in his shell, and he’s nerdy. His friend convinces him to go to a party to break the shyness shell. Events at the party end up going south. Although, he does meet Emmy, who is moving out of town the following day. Our characters end up spending the rest of the evening hanging out. “It was nice because the shoot was tiny and intimate. Bree and I had a lot of time to talk and connect on set.” Our characters bond so well by the end of the film, and I feel having a smaller production allowed Bree and I to get to know each other, which translated well onscreen.

IMG_5819

Farewell Cherry Summit

IMG_5820

Farewell Cherry Summit

I know you come to LA for scene study intensives. What is that like?

Intense! But also so inspiring and informative to keep building my craft. My teacher is amazing. She has this manner of looking for the best in everyone but she also tells you what you need to hear without sugar coating it, which produces success for others. I also do Improv classes in LA for 8-week sessions.

What can you tell us about Shards, which recently wrapped?

Shards is a horror film and my character’s name is Peter. I love horror films. Unfortunately, I can’t say too much since we recently wrapped the film. Again, it was such a great experience with the cast members and the director.

IMG_5822

Shards

How excited are you about the feature film coming out called The Adventure of TP Man and Flusher?

Super happy! My character is ‘The Granddaddy’. It will be premiering December 2018. I play a mob boss with 1980’s clothing and a New York accent. This film is directed, written, and produced by Griffin Loch (who is 14). Griffen is amazing, and this film is his second feature film and focuses upon the tragic epidemic of teen suicide. It tells a true story of deep depression, laughter, love, and friendship.

IMG_5823

Is memorizing lines somewhat easy for you?

I have to say it comes pretty naturally which is a gift. I’m able to read through a script quite quickly and get a good take on the character. From an actor’s perspective, this is extremely helpful. When you can memorize fast, it allows you to form the role within your head and play it out. If I look at the script too much, it’s not beneficial for me.

Do you think that you get typecast a lot as “the boy next door?”
Sometimes. I understand that it might be what many casting directors see initially. However, I’m incredibly outgoing and not a shy person. I enjoy each character that I take on. I must say that I am so blessed by working with such great directors and people on every film I have been a part of.

How do you feel about the support you have received from your mom?

Incredibly grateful! She is the ultimate “momager.” My mom takes care of the entire business side (emails, castings, scheduling, driving) so that I can entirely focus on the creative elements — auditions and preparing myself for filming. If I did not have my mom’s support, I would not be able to do what I do.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I hope to be on a network TV series, acting in films, and bringing people together through my work. My dream would be to have a sustainable career from acting. I’ve learned that in this business, you can’t let yourself get overwhelmed where you end up crashing. You have to be remarkably calm and keep moving forward with a strong support system.

“My dream is to bring joy to people through my films and bring people together through my work.” Blake Borders

The very first film that you starred in Say You Will is on Amazon. It’s a feature, and it also gives you the opportunity to see how far you have come.
It’s exhilarating. Say You Will is my very first film had the privilege of working on two years ago. It is out on Amazon and iTunes. It is a fantastic coming of age story. I can’t thank Nick Naveda (Director), Nancy Taylor, and Taylor Grabowsky (Producers) enough for the excellent opportunity that I was given.

We have covered a lot of your work. However, it would be amiss not to mention The Choice, a short you filmed with Director Glenn Spillman of Cellar 13 Films  (cellar13films.com) about a teen boy that chooses to be different in terms of discovering his identity. What was the experience like?

The message is powerful and important.  Glenn Spillman also plays my dad in the short. It’s about a teen boy that chooses to be different. The film has received a lot of exposure. At first, I was very unsure because I had never done anything like this before. However, Glenn Spillman was so encouraging and helpful. Glenn has been supportive during this journey.

Blake Borders has a lot to look forward to, and we can’t wait to watch his growth as an artist (even though he never quite stops). He’s very inspiring by following his passion and having fun while doing so. To follow Blake on social media

Lastly, on behalf of Gemma Magazine I would like to thank Blake Borders for the insightful interview, Glenn Spillman, who made the introduction, and Heather Borders for being so incredibly helpful during this process.
